Allman Betts Band at the Blues and Barbecue Festival, Lafayette Square New Orleans 2019
Allman Betts Band performing in Lafayette Square, New Orleans, October 19 2019 |
Here in New Orleans there’s a festival every few days in
honor or tribute to anything you could imagine.
Last weekend it was the Blues and Barbecue Festival. My wife Carol and I are back here in NOLA
after several months of travel, and decided to meet some friends at Lafayette
Square for some music and barbecue while festivalizing. We focused on food and socializing initially,
and heard a bit of good music from Erica
Falls. The party broke
up, but I hopped back on the bike and headed back to catch the Allman Betts Band
who closed out the program on Saturday.
The band leaders are Duane Betts and Devon Allman (sons of original
Allman Brothers Band members Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman). Nice show, with some trappings of the olden
days including a “psychedelic light show” during the songs, projected onto the
backstop of the stage.
This tour is said
to honor the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Allman Brothers
in 1969. Carol and I had seen Allman
Betts Band at Lockn’ in August, and as they did at that show in North Carolina,
here they included a performance of “Liz Reed” (In Memory of Elizabeth Reed),
included on Allman Brothers albums Idlewild
South (which I wore the grooves out of playing in my youth) and At Fillmore East. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Memory_of_Elizabeth_Reed
Allman Betts Band released their first album in June 2019,
recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. The recording was
produced by Matt Ross-Spang who has worked with Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John
Prine and Elvis Presley. Truth in bloggertizing: I have not yet heard this
record! I wanted to play either that or
the new Highwomen while Carol and I
were driving across Lake Ponchartrain
to attend yet another Festival (Ozone
Songwriter Festival on the Northshore) where our good friend Jean Bayou was featured. But we talked
instead! At the festival, in addition to
Jean I liked Eric Woods.
Going forward I hope to post weekly. So expect another chapter on or around
October 28. I am attending a pediatric festival (they call it a “conference”)
for a few days this week so I might gather some material from that. As previously stated, comments left on the
blog are super cool. Feel Free! I’ll be
monitoring more regularly.
This comment if from me, Rob. I'm testing the functionality.
ReplyDeletePediatric festival. I like that.
